Description

In this lesson the students will practice reading for gist and detail. The reading text is about the life of a man who buys and sells autographs. At the beginning of the lesson, some autographs of famous people will be shown and they will discuss some questions before the reading. The students will also learn some vocabulary that might prevent them from understanding the text. Before they start to skim the text, T will give three one-sentence summaries of the text, the ss will be choosing the correct one-sentence summary for the text. This is followed by reading the text for detail and ss will complete the activities such as; matching the questions to the answers, putting the phrases in the gaps. After that, a handout on vocabulary will be given (match the words to their definitions).Finally, they will be answering in a speaking activity whether they want to get the autograph one of those famous people,mentioned in the article.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will show pictures of famous people's autographs on board. They will listen and guess to whom these autographs belong to.

Pre-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make the vocabulary easier

T will give the handouts including reading text and want them to discuss the questions in exercise 3 in pairs, ask some students for answers. Elicit some guesses about what might talk about in the article.Ask CCQs, what is the difference between signature and autograph? It will be better to teach some difficult vocabulary, show the words from the text ( I.e.drawing a line, track down sth, indulge yourself, backstage, trade, make an exception with sth) T will provide the meaning through a student friendly definition.

Gist Reading (3-4 minutes) • To provide ss with less challenging gist reading

T will write three one-sentence summaries on board (one is correct and the other two false). Firstly, T will have the ss read questions then want them to read the text quickly to choose the correct paragraph matching the questions. T gives the correct answer.

Detailed Reading (12-15 minutes) • To provide ss with more challenging detailed reading

Ask the students to read the text for a second time and have students complete exercise 1. Give the correct answers to the questions. Also ask them to underline the parts of the text that helped them to answer the questions.After this, have students complete ex.2. T wants them to check answers in pairs and then whole class check is followed by.

Post-reading (10-12 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to listen their respond to the text and boost their vocabulary

T gives ss a handout consisting the words that they may not know from the reading text. Students match the word to their definitions. After all, students will discuss if they would like to get the autograph of any people mentioned in the article, whose would they get and why?
