Abc worksheet
Abc four pictures
Abc handout of a text and a detailed exercise

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about Bangkok in the context of my last holiday

Subsidiary Aims

  • reviewing grammar ( past simple in the negative and positive form) in the context of my last holiday

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will start his lesson by showing SS three pictures of three famous places including Bangkok which the characters in the reading following text visited and describing but without telling the SS that we are going to read about this place and then T will ask SS to guess where these places are and whether these places are good to go on holiday or not, after getting some answers or guesses from SS, T will give students a handout containing speaking questions about their last holiday and will ask them to work in pairs to answer three preferred ones of these questions.. ICQs: are you working individually? NO will you write something or just speak? NO speak how many questions should you answer at least? Three T will give SS two to three minutes and when they finish, T will take feedback fast by nominating two students to tell the class what they discussed with their partners.

Pre-Reading (3-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T will pre-teach some vocabularies by giving SS a matching exercise containing five words and five pictures and SS need to match them in pairs. SS will stand up and check their answers with the other students when they finish. Afterwards, T will give students the answer key to make sure they got the right answers. Then, T will introduce the topic of the text that SS are going to read and mention that text will be about a girl named Anjela who went on holiday to the city of Bankok with her friend and they are describing the city in the passage.

While-Reading (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist reading tasks

T will ask SS to close their papers first so they do not see the text and then T will explain that he is going to ask them a simple question and they need to find the answer from the text but they cannot open their papers and start reading until he says(start) and when he says stop, they will close their papers again and tell him the answer. T will point out that the one who finishes first will be the winner. if SS like this activity, T might extend it to ask two or three more questions of this kind.

While-Reading (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

SS will be given a task in which they need to scan the text to highlight the past simple verbs. T will show an example by reading the first sentence from the text and highlighting the first past simple verb.T will give students three minutes to do that individually. When they finish, they will pair-check their answers and then T will go through the answers very quickly with the whole class. Afterwards, T will give another detailed task which is a true or false exercise in which they need to read the passage in details to decide on the true and wrong ones and correct the false. The exercise will include five to six statements from the text. SS will read and do the exercise individually. when they finish, T will ask them to check their answers with their partners and then to stand up and check answers with the whole class and T will take whole class feedback fast.

Post-Reading/Listening (6-7 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T will ask students some general questions about the text such as, Did Anjela and her friend like the place? did you like it? what did you like about it most? After that, T will refer to the general speaking questions which students have been given in the beginning of the lesson and ask SS to answer these questions but in a written and completed way by writing their answers on their notebooks. T will give students limited time and ask them to work individually. When the time's up, T will get the feedback by asking students to stand up and read each other's sentences. If the time allows, T will do some error corrections on the WB.
