Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of Istanbul

Procedure

Stage 1: Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will show a video to the students about Cape Town, and ask them if they would like to go there. Students will discuss. T will elicit some answers.

Stage 2: Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text and elicit the meaning from the students

T will distribute HO1. Students will read about Cape Town and fill in the gaps by choosing the correct quantifier. By this activity, T will elicit the meaning from the students. After they're done, T will hand out the answer key and give them time to discuss the answers

Stage 3: Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

On the board, T will write the marker sentences from the previous text. T will elicit the quantifier from the students when writing on the board. Then, T will elicit if the noun is countable or non-countable in each sentence. Then, T will elicit the difference between some and any. Afterwards, T will handout HO2 in order to see if the students understand the form. T will hand out the answer keys. Then, T will do some drilling for pronunciation.

Stage 4: Controlled Practice (3-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T will distribute HO 3 for the controlled practice. The students will fill in the gaps with the correct quantifier. T will get an early finisher to write the answers on the board.

Stage 5: Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students will use the target language by speaking to each other. T will ask the students about Istanbul. They will discuss the traffic, nightlife, food etc. in Istanbul in pairs.
