To provide scan reading practice using a postcard text in the context of a vacation in Izmir.
Procedure (20-29 minutes)
1. Post picture of 3 suitcases 2. elicit ideas from sts. What are these? What can you tell me about this picture? 3. Ask a comparative question, elicit superlatives they may know.
TEXT: Post Card Instructions: Read for gist 1st time. Who is it to, from and where did it arrive? Then in pairs Read the postcard 2nd time and circle any superlatives in the postcard. Peer check and correct. This is model for postcard writing for semi-controlled productive skill exercise.
YES/NO Target language HO-Surprising facts about Istanbul. Sts scan 8 sentences and fill in gap with YES for sentences with superlative and NO for other sentences that are fun facts to know, possibly adding to sts background knowledge. Peer correct.
Superlatives WB Model Sentences Meaning: We use superlatives to compare one item (like the tallest suitcase) with two or more others. That someone or something is at an extreme (The Ferrari is expensive but the Lamgourgini is the most expensive car on the planet). Form: Generally an ending 'st', 'est' are added to the regular adjectives ending in a vowel or double consonsant. Irregular and Special use are highlighted. * model on board superlatives with high frequency words like, small, big, tall,large- add endings and room THE to be added to superlative form of adjective. List some regular, irregular and one or two special cases: good-best and bad-worst
