Description

In this lesson, students learn about the comparative adjectives through guided discovery based on a reading text about the culture shock. After covering the reading, students are introduced to differences between countries and the result of culture shock. This activity is followed by a controlled practice in which students will complete some sentences with comparative adjectives. Finally there is a free practice via a final role-play speaking activity.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Give the students some cutouts with some opposites on them. They should find the their opposites and sit next to each other. After that the teacher will elicit the adjectives by showing some photos. (the adjectives are expensive, cheap, small, big, comfortable, uncomfortable, ugly, attractive, old, new, easy and difficult)

Build in the contex (5-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Show the picture of Juliana who wants to buy a car. There are two advertisements. Ss should work in pairs and talk about which car is suitable for her. ( T will ask these two questions; what does Juliana want to buy? why? how does she want to spend?) T will give the ss some sentences . They should find the true sentences. T will give them the answer key.

Clarification (8-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

There are five marker sentences from the context which has already built; 1) The Deluxe is faster than the Micro. 2) The Micro is older than the Deluxe. 3) The Deluxe is more comfortable than the Micro. 4) The Micro is easier to park than the Deluxe. 5) The Micro is better for Juliana than the Deluxe. T will clarify the meaning, the form and the pronunciation. CCQs are; Deluxe top speed is 180 Km/hr and Magellen Micro top speed is 100 km/hr, which one is more? ( the Deluxe ) which one is old? ( Victa Deluxe) is the Micro good for travelling? (no) ( by drawing) you want to park in this parking lot, which car can you park here?( The micro) which car can Juliana buy? ( The Micro)

Controlled practice (5-8 minutes) • To have more practice on TL

Ss will work individually and do the first exercise. They should compare the cars ( the deluxe and the micro) and write the correct form of each adjective. Then they will check their answers in pairs.

Controlled Practice (5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

complete the sentences with the comparatives in exercise 2( page 95) give them time to check it together feedback to the whole class

Free Practice (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Claa will be divided to different groups and the teacher give them a topic. T says the students that I am a tourist and for example you should tell me a good place to eat breakfast and tell me why. they should talk together and compare their ideas together. then they share ideas with the whole class.
