Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and review about passive in the context of a reading about 'Louise Olympic dream' covered in the lesson before my lesson. There are some controlled practices and a freer speaking & writing activity.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency in speaking through a conversation in the context of 'which city can be a good option to host Olympics in Turkey'.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-----welcome the class----- I am Solmaz from Iran. It is nice to work with you. -----Ask a few simple questions------ Which cities were nominated to host the Olympics 2020? Istanbul, Madrid, and Tokyo. Which city was awarded over Istanbul and Madrid? Tokyo. -----Display the complete answers on the projector-------- Ask which part is important? Tokyo or international Olympics committee. Elicit the reason, because of emphasizing. Or the subject in unknown shown in the third example.

Exposure (5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Put the reading page on the projector. ------Ask them to look at the first column in the table. In the second column they are going to change the emphasis on the words which the sentences start with. HANDOUT 1 -------Find the words 'Official competitions', 'The Olympics', 'Snowboarding', 'Louise', 'Paragliding', 'A sport'. A few of these words are mentioned several times during the text. I just want to make sure they will find the right one to be be able to complete the table. -----Ask them to read the sentences for the words they have found------- They can also speak in pair what is emphasized in each sentence.

controlled practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with practice of the target language through a context of reading

-------Put only table scanned on the projector------- Ask the Ss to complete the table from the sentences they looked up within the reading. It is a pair work. So I am going to put the Ss in pair. -------Ask Ss to come and write the answers on the board.

Highlighting (4-6 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

-----Still the table is displayed on the board------- ------Elicit the formula for each ?-------- Circle 'be' + past participle. Emphasize that 'be' and 'P.P' are used to make passive any time. ------Put the formula page on the board--------- Ask Ss to go through it and see if they have already predicted those formulas.

Controlled Practice (4-6 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

--------Put the Exe. 2 on the projector------ Ask them to flip to the same page. Tell the Ss in each sentence, they are going to choose one of the phrases in Italics as a right answer. To make it much easier, I have put them in two highlighted boxes. It might be difficult for some of them to recognize the Italic fonts from normal ones. It is a pair work. Then it can change into group work.

controlled practice (7 minutes) • Clarification through writing sentences in passive forms

------write the answers for the questions in Ex. 2 on the board---- -----Ask the Ss to write the answers in a complete sentence----- It is a pair work first, then they can check the answers in group work.

Freer Practice (8-12 minutes) • Practice passive voice through a speaking & writing activity

Divide the Ss into three groups Name them, Istanbul, Izmir, Ankara. Each group is going to speak about: For example: Istanbul can be nominated to host Olympics in Turkey. Because: A new international airport is being constructed in Istanbul. The third Phosphorus bridge will be built. The other two groups will do the same about Izmir and Ankara. Depending on time, each group write three to five passive sentences from what they have discussed.
