Teaching Practice 7
Elementary Level level
Description
Materials
Main Aims
-
My main aim is reading, to make the students comprehend the text, through while reading exercises. They will do "true or false" exercises and answer questions about the text.
Subsidiary Aims
-
My subsidiary aims are vocabulary and speaking. I will have to elicit key words before making them read the text and complete the tasks. After the while-reading tasks are finished, we will have a post-reading task which will serve as a free practice session. This time they will reflect on what they have learned, speaking and interacting with each other.
Procedure (45-55 minutes)
The lesson context is "a trip to Thailand." So I need to make the students warm up to the idea of travelling to South-East Asia. I will reflect the map of South-East Asia on the board and ask them if they have ever been there, and which countries they know in that part of the World. I will ask them what they know about that part or if they feel curious or not. (Here I am trying to stimulate curiosity in the subject.)
This part will serve as a prediction task. I will Show them a few photos of Thailand (Bangkok and Phuket) throygh the projector but will not tell them which country we are talking about. They will have a few minutes to discuss about which country and which cities that may be, and they will share their ideas with the class. If they cannot come up with the answer I will give it to them. Additionally I will ask them what they can do in Thailand (eat Thai food, Thai massage...etc.) If they cannot come up with answers I will prompt and try to elicit info from them. Afterwards I will move on to elicit some vocabulary. I will elicit a few adjectives, verbs and nouns (six words in total). I don't want to focus too much on adjectives because that material will be exploited by the lesson after mine. I will elicit island (they have done it before but they had some difficulty pronouncing this, I remember. So i feel the need to review this word), beach, relax, sunbathe, excellent, capital (as in the capital city). When this is done too I can move on.
I will ask the students to find (underline from the text) three activities they can do in Phuket and three activities they can do in Bangkok. They will work alone for a few minutes and then check with their peers. After this, we will do a whole class feedback. I will elicit answers from the class.
I will give them a set of six questions about Phuket and Bangkok. To be able to answer these questions, they will abviously have to engage in a more detailed reading of the text. They will work alone on the text and then check with their peers. In the end, we will do a ahole class feedback.
I will divide the students into three groups (apple, berry, cherry). Each group has to choose a holiday destination in Turkey. Each group has to describe that particular city. I will monitor them during the process and help them choose a place, because two groups shouldn't choose the same city. I will listen to them closely while they discuss and take note of their mistakes, for the error correction later on. The chief of each group will briefly share with us their description of that city (Antalya, Bodrum, Çeşme...etc.)
Here, I will correct the prononciation and grammar mistakes that I have noticed while they were on the post-reading task.
