Description

In this lesson students will be practising Simple Past and Past Continuos. They will focus on the differences between two tense and they will try to use them in sentences.

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of Past Simple and Past Continuos in the context of ghost stories

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide product writing practice of a story in the context of ghost stories

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show students some pictures associated with ghosts. Ask: What do you think these are? (ghosts, spirits, monsters, etc.) Are these real? (yes/no photoshopped) Do you believe in ghosts? (yes / no) Have you ever seen or heard any stories about ghosts? (yes, no) Do you know any stories to share? (If the answer is yes allow students to share with the class)

Exposure (6-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Give students the story "Ghost of Glencoe". Ask them to take 3-4 minutes to read the text and answer the following two questions: Why were they in Glencoe?( they were hiking) Who did the group meet? (ghost of an old man who died years ago) Do you think this story can be real? If not what do you think they saw? (answers may vary)

Highlighting (3-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Give students the exercise number 1, Ask: Go back to text and find which category do the red sentences belong, which category do the blue sentences belong. Red: b (finished actions in the past) Blue: a (ongoing actions in the past, it gives information about the background situation)

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Write the following sentence on the board: We were walking through the beautiful Glencoe valley, when we saw a tall man standing beside the road Draw a timeline, ask CCQs: Are they both in past or in present? (past) Which one gives the information about the backgroung situation? (we were walking through the beautiful Glencoe valley) Which one gives the information about the finished action? (We saw a tall man standing beside the road) Give students the small chart and ask them to fill in the blanks. Peer Check: Ask students to compare their answers with their partners We asked him to join us. S.P +____+ Object answer: S.P+ Verb2+ Object He was wearing a kilt. S.P+__________+Object S.P+ was/were+Verbing+Object Ask: For the first one do I use Verb1? (no) Is it verb3? (no) Which form is this? (verb 2) Ask: For the second one do I need was or were? (yes) Do I use verb2? (no) How do I use my verb? (verb+ing)

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Give students the fill in the blanks exercise. Give them 10 minutes to complete Once the exercise is finished, ask them to check their answers with their partners. Class feedback: Ask students to take turns and give their answers. Answers to questions: 1. was washing, 2. heard, 3. thought, 4.was, 5.was taking, 6. remembered, 7. wasn't, 8.was, 9. heard, 10. tried, 11. touched. Correct the pronunciation errors if there are any.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Give students the " Write Past Simple and Past Continuos" Exercise. Do the first one as an example, give students eight minutes to complete the exercise Ask students to compare their answers with their partners. Ask students to give the answers to class. Answers are: 1. While I was camping with friends, I heard a strange noise near our tent. 2. I saw a ghostly figure in the distance while I was walking my dog. 3. While I was visiting a castle, I saw a lady in the white with no head. 4. A man on black horse flew past me while I was climbing a tower. 5. While I was visiting a church, I heard a terrible scream.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ask students to look at "Fill in the blanks" exercise read the story again and write an ending to the story by using at least two Past Continous and two Past Simple exercise. Give them 10-11 minutes to complete the exercise. Ask students to read each others ending and check for the mistakes.
