Materials
Main Aims
-
To provide practice of "can, can't" in the context of holiday
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide detailed listening practice using a text about holiday in the context of grammar (can, can't)
Procedure (29-39 minutes)
My lesson's context is talking about "Holiday in San Francisco". As a warmer, I was thinking to ask some simple questions about holidays in generally and also some questions about San Francisco (e.g. What do you know about San Francisco, Where is San Francisco etc...). During this stage, I will use some pictures of San Francisco issued from my handout while asking some questions. In this part of the lesson, ss will also do a quick mathcing activity in pairs, by finding words on the proposed photos.
In this stage of the lesson students will focus on a listening activity. After, they will have to complete two tasks issued from the listening. The first task will be done alone but checked in pairs and they will have to put the proposed photos in order. In the second task, ss will work in pairs and will have to match the proposed activities with the famous San Francisco's places heard from the listening. For a better understanding of the tasks, teacher and the ss will do the first examples together. Each task will be followed by the teacher's F/B.
While having listening activities, students' attention will already be exposed to the target language, which is "can/can't.
In this stage ss will finally discover the main aim of the lesson: grammar. This stage is consisted of three exercises. All exercises are very short and will be done in pairs. The aim of those short exercises is to clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language (can/can't) issued from the listening. As part of the F/B, the teacher will focus on pronunciation, but also by asking some questions in order to explain to the ss that the "can/can't" form can be used to express some abilities.
The last stage stage of my lesson will consist of a speaking activity related to the context. Students will participate in a guessing game and will work in pairs. The activity will be presented by written instructions from the handout. Each pair will have to explain a famous touristic destination previously given by the teacher. By explaining the destinations , they will have to use at least two phrases containing "can" and two phrases containing "can't". The destination will be presented to the class and the other ss will have to guess the secret destination in question.
