Life Events Vocabulary Lesson
Intermediate, B1 level

Description

In this lesson, the students will be exposed to the theme of giving bad news in the context of life events. The ss will do a series of tasks in order to grasp how to give bad news and what kind of procedure they need to folow. In the lead in stage, the students will discuss about the events given to them and will decide whether they are good news or bad news. In the exposure stage, the ss wil discuss how they should give bad news and will be given the cotentext vocabulary. In controlled practise stage, they will be give text which they should complete with the words. As a freer practise, they will get in pairs, be given a bad news and they have to write a little anectode and act it out in the class.While they are acting out, the other ss wil look at the criterias and give feedback to each pair.

Main Aims

Procedure

Lead-In (5-7 minutes) • To prepare the students for the context

- The T invites everyone on the board and asks them to write G if it is a good news and B if it is a bad bews. - They do a WC check. - The T asks the ss to get in pairs. - The T gives the instruction: "with your pair discuss which ones have happened to you before. You have 3 minutes."

Exposure (10-15 minutes) • To set lesson context and prepare the students for the practise

- The T does chestig ad gives the instruction. "Now there are some bad news. Find the best way to give the bad news. You have 5 minutes." - While the ss are doing the task the T writes the questions for the next activity. (check language analysis for details) - When the time is up, the T gets the ss in pairs and let the check the answers. - The T elicits some answers and gives feedback on them. - The T sets the groups. - The T gives the instruction. "With your group, talk about how they give the bad news and discuss about these. (the T shows the questions on the board) You have 5 minutes." - When the time is up, the T elicits some answers and writes them on the board and tries to get the target language. (Give some good news, prepare your listener, give a reason, use a soft tone of voice, don't make people too upset)

Controlled Practise (7-10 minutes) • To provide students with a controlled practise of the target language

- The T gives the instruction. "Now, complete the text with the words above it. You have 5 minutes." - When the time is up, the T starts the FB session and elicits answer and does error correction about the answers if necessary.

Freer Practise (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with a freer practise on the context.

- The T gets te ss in pairs. - The T gives the instruction. "You will have one bad news. With your partner discuss how to give that bad news in the best way. Then write a dialogue about it. You have 5 minutes." - The T does ICQ. - When the time is up, the T gives the instruction. "Now, each pair will read their dialogue. When they are presenting their dialogue, the others will fill in this feedback sheet. (Does chesting for the FB paper) - The T spreads the papers and starts the presentation. After the presentations each pair gets their fb papers.
