Description

In this lesson, Ss will learn phrases that can be used more in spoken English about things you are certain are true and to express ideas more strongly. They will follow this up with vocabulary practice and speaking activity related to the overall context of the lesson.

  • To give students semi-controlled speaking practice to use phrases they've learnt

Procedure

Lead-in/Presentation (8-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will show some pictures about Newton and moon to set the context. Whole class will work together to find some facts about them. Teacher can draw attention to these sentences; Gravity is what pulls us toward Earth Newton got the idea by seeing an apple fall from a tree. The moon orbits the earth. The moon is not a planet. T will ask some questions to check the meaning of the words given in the exercise one; is gravity a fact? ( yes) do you have any doubt about it? (no) is moon a planet? (no) is it actual? (yes) so the marker sentences could be in actual fact moon is not a planet. there's no denying that, gravity is what pulls us toward earth. Teacher will give the students the handouts to put the words in the correct phrases. Ss may work in groups and then teacher will check the answers.

Focus on form/meaning (8-10 minutes) • To practice the TL with a Controlled Written Practice

T may divide the students to groups of 4. Ss will work together and match the two parts of the sentences. T will monitor the students and let them to check other groups. then the correct answer will be written on the board. T will work on the intonation and function of the phrases.

Speaking (10-15 minutes) • To personalise the phareses in a pair work

T will put the the students into groups of four to six people. give them a topic and time to think about the topic. Ask each group to nominate a speaker. the speaker starts talking on the topic. after 30 seconds, another person in the group calls out ''change your mind'' . the speaker must continue his/her talk but now saying the opposite of what he/she was saying before. topics might be: cycling in the city being a vegetarian cheap air travel 24-hour shopping making English obligatory at school junk food most embarrassing moment

Extension (10-15 minutes) • To have more practice on fluency and speaking

some sentences will be written on the board. Ss will express their agreement and disagreement , then make the sentences with those phrases. sentences could be; 1. Blondes ARE stupid. 2. Grades don’t matter. 3. It is not wrong to steal bread to feed your family. 4. Men are happier than women. 5. Keep your mom off Facebook. 6. Adult children living at home can be a pain. 7. A majority of vegetarians don’t love animals. 8. Abortion should be illegal
