PAST PERFECT TENSE

Description

In this lesson, students will learn past perfect tense through some contexts. They will review simple past and put events/actions in order.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of past perfect tense in the context of story.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy in speaking practice in past perfect tense in the context of events in the past.

Procedure

Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shows some pictures to ss and ask them which action happened first. Later, t draws a timeline that indicate the events which is first and second. T writes some sentences on white board and ask ss which event happened first. T writes the form of the past perfect tense on the white board and elicit the core meaning of the past perfect tense. T makes lots of drillings.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Ex:1. Ss underline the event in bold which happened first. T shows the events on the time line according to their order. Then ss move on ex:2, they complete the rules of past perfect. Page 135,ex:3. T gives a handout which provides to practice in past perfect rules to the ss. Peer check.

Highlighting (7-9 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T gives a handout about Zadie Smith's life story. Ss read a short biography of Zadie Smith and t asks them to turn their handout over. T elicit the information they remember and correct the pronunciation-if necessary. Then ss turn over their handouts again and put the information about Zadie's life in order.When ss finish,they compare their answers with their partner- but they shouldn't look at the paragraph, if they have differences in order,they can check with the text. When they finish, ss put away the handout and they try to remember the order of the events again with their partner

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Ex:3. Ss read the sentences about a family situations and write what they think happened before.Ss should think about the reasons and use the past perfect. T models of the first sentence and gave reasons why this event had happened. Ss discuss about the other situation with their partner. Wc feedback.

Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T shows the sentences in exercise 1-pronunciation- and wants ss to pronounce the underlined verbs. Then ss listen and check their answers.T elicits the weak&strong form of an auxiliary verb and makes lots of drillings. Ss move on exercise 2,they complete the rules with the words in the box. Wc feedback.

Free Practice (6-9 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Pair-work. Student A is a boss and student B is a business man. T tells them the businessman's trip went wrong and he has to explain what had happened to his boss.T models the dialogues. Boss:Why did you miss the plane? Man: Because I had arrived late at the airport. T highlights the usage past perfect tense. Then ss change the partners and make the dialogue again.
