Technology: How have technology changed the world?
Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students will study the topic "Technology". As the warm-up session, a video clip will be played to let the students brainstorm on how the technology has changed the world and if it has made our lives better or worse. The lesson will continue with a vocabulary activity which has groups to fill in such as energy, machines, medicine/science, IT(information technology). Students will categorize the words into groups in pair works. No feedback will be given. Then necessary vocabulary will be taught by eliciting, checking, drilling and writing sessions. In drilling, the focus will be on "word stress". Next, to the existing vocabulary, more words will be added to each category and will be checked with a proper FB technique. After that there will be a speaking activity which will enable students to use the current vocabulary. Here some help can be taken by the TB (Teachers' Book of SpeakOut Intermediate.)

Materials

Abc SpeakOut Intermediate Sts' Book

Main Aims

  • To provide stds with some vocabulary related to "Technology". This will be via video clip watching, brainstorming,fill-in-the-blank activities and an active teaching activity (a game with fly sticks to hit the word/phrases on the board).

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide some vocabulary about technology and then let stds speak(Std-Std) about it to find extra vocabulary about the topic and finally teaching the "word stress" by some drilling. All speaking activities will be based on brainstorming, eliciting and drilling for word stress.

Procedure

Stage 1 (Lead In) (5-6 minutes) • Speaking

First stage- just write the title "Technology" on the board, let them see the title, think about it for a very short period of time and then ask stds what techology means to them.

Stage 2 (5-6 minutes) • Speaking

Second stage-Ask them the Qs in the book: "How have the machines and technology changed the world? Have they made it a better or worse place?" Let them discuss in pairs or groups, then play the video clip named the Jetson's Future of Technology to check their answers.

Stage 3 (5-6 minutes) • Main aim: Vocabulary, sub-aim: Speaking

Third stage-Let the stds work in pair or groups to put the words and phrases in the box in the correct word web. (pg 56- ex. 1B). The teacher will only monitor the stds. No FB.

Stage 4 (5-6 minutes) • Main aim: Vocabulary, sub-aim: Speaking

Fourth stage- the necessary vocabulary will be taught on page 56 ex. 1B with pictures. The teacher will give out the pictures to the students, let them work in pairs/groups to match the words/phrases from the bokks with the pictures the teacher prepared. The teacher will elicit the answers from the stds.

Stage 5 (6-7 minutes) • Main aim: Vocabulary, sub-aim: Speaking

Fifth stage- here the teacher will do some word stress drills. The teacher will play the track about word stress( pg 56 -1D) and then make the stds repeat after each word.

Stage 6 (7-8 minutes) • Main aim: Vocabulary, sub-aim: Speaking

Sixth stage- here the teacher will play an active game with the students. The teacher with put the pictures on the board randomly and write the initial letters of the words and phrases about technology. Then the teacher put the students in a row with two lines and then give the stds plastic fly stick. Every time the teacher say the words, the stds at the front of the line will hit on the picture and then go back to the end of the line pf his/her group.

Stage 7 (5-5 minutes) • Vocabulary

Seventh stage- in this final stage, stds will do a vocabulary activity. This is a fill-in-the-blanks activity rearranged by the teacher with an answer key. In this activity, stds will work in pairs/groups and can check each other before handing out the answer key.

Aid exercises • Speaking

This activity has been prepared as an aid. When I feel that I need more practical speaking exercises for speaking I am planning to use this. I most probably use this stage 4.
