To provide accuracy and fluency speaking practice in the context of asking questions using comparatives/superlatives
Procedure (62-85 minutes)
Play the invisible ball introductions game. Use the vocabulary flipchart with the matching exercise to introduce the topic and clarify meaning with pictures.
Show pictures of a small car, a Ferrari and an aeroplane. Ask ss, if you had to go from Dubai to Abu Dhabi in 40 hour, would you take the small car or t the Ferrari? Ferrari! Why? Because it is faster. If you wanted to reach Abu Dhabi in 20 mins, which of these three would you choose? aeroplane. Why? Because it is the fastest. Note fast, faster, the fastest. Now look at just the cars. Is the Ferrari faster than the small car or a lot faster ? Lot faster. Elicit a few examples from the class Briefly explain the rules of forming comparatives and superlatives.
Ask ss to complete 5A individually. Ask them to peer correct. Listen to the answers. Focus on 5C. Listen and repeat to focus on the stressed syllables. Ask ss to try and change the sentences into questions. Demonstrate the first one. Ask them to work in pairs or in groups. Elicit as an open group.
Ask ss to complete exercise 6A individually. Check answers. Ask ss to go around the class with these questions and ask and answer questions. Each ss should speak to atleast 2 other students. Monitor and make notes. Feedback and corrections.
Focus on 7A. Elicit or explain meanings: green , recycle. Ask ss to speak to atleast 3 others in the class and complete the survey. Monitor and help the weaker ss. Ask ss to write a profile on one of the ss.Ask them to use comparatives and superlatives while writing. Encourage ss to read the profile they have written in front of the class.
