Students learn about the possessive 's and how to distinguish it from the apostrophe 's.

Main Aims

  • To introduce possessive 's in the context of families and to help Ss distinguish between this and the apostrophe 's in contractions.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-In (3-5 minutes) • To review vocab from previous lesson

Project Robinson family tree. Elicit a few sentences about relationships between people in tree by asking "Who is [name]?" Model first.

Controlled Practice (5-10 minutes) • To further practice family relationships

Show handout with ex. 5. Give instructions: tick correct sentences and correct ones that are wrong. Model first one. Have them do rest on own. Check each others' work. Monitor for problems and give feedback.

Highlighting (5-8 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the use of possessives and contractions

a) Use ex. 6 as guide (NOT handout). Write sentence in 6a on board. POSSESSIVE = one thing/person belongs to another. Elicit rule. b) Write on board: We also use 's to ____ a word. Elicit word in blank. (shorten) ex: Jenny's going to the party. c) Write sentences on board. Elicit whether 's means possessive or is/has.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To check students' understanding of apostrophes

Show ex. 4a and 4b. Model first one on board. Monitor to decide how to do FB.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

a) Have students open HO. Point out three photos. Ask Ss to predict who they are. b) Play conversation R2.9. Ask if predictions were right. c) Ask Ss to look at 9c. Ask what they can remember. Play conversation R2.9 again and have Ss circle circle words. Do first one (#2) together. Monitor for use of TL and use errors for FB.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

a) Model this after ex. 11 (NOT a handout). Write 1-5 on board. List 5 family members. Ask Ss to do same on their paper. b) Ask Ss to swap papers with partner. Ask questions about partner's family. Model first one. c) If time - write some incorrect sentences on board and ask Ss to correct them.
