Description

In this lesson, the students will review some vocabulary about sports. They will read an interview of a successful athlete, do some exercises in pairs, followed by WCFB where they will justify their answers and a short discussion.

Materials

Abc Reading (p.12 ex. 1, 2, 3, 4) English Unlimited SB, Cambridge University Press
Abc Vocabulary (p.13 ex. 1) English Unlimited SB, Cambridge University Press
Abc A picture of a luger and a picture of Olympic circles.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice of an interview in the context of unusual athletes.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To review vocabulary about physical activities.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students.

T will introduce herself to the Ss. Write 'Favorite Sports' in the middle of the WB and ask the students about their favorite sports. "What's your favorite sport?" Write some of these on the WB, using a different colour of marker.

Review of Vocabulary (7-9 minutes) • To familiarise the Ss with the vocabulary related with the context

Ss will do Vocabulary ex.1 in pairs. Here T can use the ICQ "I want you to do this exercise with your partner. You have 3 minutes." Give the handouts. T will monitor the process and will elicit the answers from Ss once they are finished. Make pronunciation drills immediately with all of the words. May write some of the words on the WB to show the location of the stress etc.

Pre-Reading (2-3 minutes) • Set the context of the reading (Use some pictures from Google images to elicit "Olympics" and "luge")

Chest pictures about Olympics and luge and stick them on the WB. Brief WC discussion about these topics. Get them to pronounce "luge" and drill.

Gist Reading (5-6 minutes) • To give Ss an idea about the actual reading

After instructing them to do ex.1 on pg. 12 individually, give the handouts. They will have 1 minute to do so. Once they are finished, they will check their answers with their partner "Check your answers with your partner." "Are your answers the same?" Then T will elicit the answers from 3-4 Ss.

Scanning Reading (6-8 minutes) • Get the Ss to scan the text for the answers

Ss will do ex. 2 individually. They will have 3 minutes for this. When the time is finished T will ask them to check their answers in pairs. Then there will be a WCFB where T will elicit the answers from Ss with the justifications. "Can you tell us why you chose this answer?" "And which sentence from the interview gives us this information?"

Detailed Reading (9-11 minutes) • Have the Ss to make an intensive reading

They will do ex. 3 and they will have approximately 6 minutes for this. Then they will compare answers in pairs. "Can you compare your answers with your partner? Are they the same?" Then T will elicit the answers and will ask for justification.

Post-Reading (4-6 minutes) • To make the students use the TL and spot and correct errors

Do ex. 4 as groups of 4. Ss will discuss about Ruben and what he's done. T will also add other topics to the conversation such as "Where and when the next Olympic Games will be held? What's your favorite sport to watch on the Olympics? Do you know any well-known athletes?" Give them about 3 minutes to discuss and monitor the speaking. Collect errors and correct them on the WB in the end of the lesson.
