Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will write 'inspirations.com' on the board, and ask Ss what kind of website they think it is. T will elicit answers and ask Ss if they think such websites are useful.

Task (8-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Ss will quickly read the text 'Inspirations' and try to figure out what the blanked word is. T will elicit the answer: smile

Presentation (5-8 minutes) • Make sure Ss understand what suffixes and prefixes are

T will explain to Ss what suffixes and prefixes are and make sure they understand. T will read through the explanations before eliciting the answers to the questions. Draw Ss attention to the language notes, and elicit further examples.

Suffix Task (8-10 minutes) • Make sure Ss understand what suffixes are

Ss will find the words 'powerful' and 'valuable' in the text and underline each suffix. Then Ss will underline any suffixes of the other adjectives. Tell them not all adjectives have suffixes. WC will check answers together. Ask Ss to read the explanation in 1b and put them in pairs to answer the two questions. Check answers with the class

Prefix Presentation (8-10 minutes) • Make sure Ss understand what prefixes are

T will ask Ss to find the words 'unhappy' and 'discouraged' in the text. Ss will then re-read the 'Inspirations' text and find any other prefixes in the text. WC will review the answers as a class. Students will then work in pairs to come up with three prefixes on their own.

Task (8-10 minutes) • Ss can practice using suffixes and prefixes

Ss will work in pairs to complete the adjectives in bold in ex.1 on pg.22. They will discuss in pairs what the definition of those adjectives are. Ss will write the answers on the WB.

Task (5-10 minutes) • Freer Practice/Speaking

Ss will work in pairs to discuss what characteristics they most admire or find annoying. T will encourage Ss to agree/disagree with one another, and to give reasons for their choices.

Vocabulary (3-5 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the task language

T will check that Ss understand the word 'sympathetic.' They often confuse it with 'generally nice or kind.' T will explain that it means 'the capacity to share in the feelings of others, especially during their distress, sorrow, or unfulfilled desires.' (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/sympathy)
