Description

In this lesson, ss will learn about the use of verbs that take the infinitive through guided discovery. The lesson will be based in the context of ambitions and ss will be encouraged to speak about what they want to do with their lives.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about people's ambitions and to learn to use verbs that take the infinitive in the context of speaking about their own ambitions.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of talking about one's ambitions

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (10-15 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Stick sentence cards with ambitions like -get a new job, learn to speak English, learn to dance etc. around the classroom. Ask ss to walk around, read and note the things that they too wish to do. Introduce the word ambition. Ask- Why do you attend this class? To learn English. That is an ambition. Elicit Ss' ambitions and note them on a flipchart. The weaker ss could choose one or more from the displayed sentence cards.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Pre teach vocabulary-trivial,continents, marathon, Radiohead, Goth, safari, Continents, safari- use pictures, Radiohead- English rock band. Use picture of the band Trivial-of little value or importance. unimportant marathon 1.a long-distance running race, strictly one of 26 miles 385 yards (42.195 km). "I was due to run the marathon the next day" ยท [more] Goth- a style of rock music. Elaborate saying these musicians play heavy metal music and prefer to dress in black. Introduce the text to the ss. These are comments about personal ambitions posted by people on a popular website. Other people give them advice on how to make their ambitions come true or be successful is achieving their ambition. Ask students where they go to get advice?Ask ss to read the text individually and answer- Do you think the advice is good? Yes, it is. Set time-5 minutes and use a timer. Elicit answer from the task.

While-Reading #1 (15-20 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

Group ss. Ask them to read the text again and complete the gap fill exercise. Time given for activity 7-10 minutes. Check as an open group. Highlight the use of verbs+ to + infinitives. Elicit examples of using these verb phrases with other nouns. eg: go to school, go on holiday, climb a hill. Refer the list made by the students and elicit the sentences from them. Feedback and corrections.

Reading Assessment (35-45 minutes) • Students' assessment

Clarify what true/ false/ doesn't say mean. Use a flipchart to demonstrate. Choose para 1 from text in 11A. Q1. People drive quickly. False Q2. There are many accidents because people drive dangerously. Doesn't say. Q3. People are always speaking on the phone in the car. True Demonstrate and set up reading task. Time for the task is 25 minutes. Use a timer.

Post-Reading (10-15 minutes) • Revise and review the use of verbs

If time permits, refer to the rules on verbs that take the infinitive form and practice using the worksheets. HW- Write a paragraph about your ambitions for this year.
