Description

In this lesson, students will discuss their opinions about which professions they 'love to hate' through listening to a radio programme. They will practise gist and detailed listening skills to find out about most hated professions in the UK. They will follow this up with a speaking activity to make up their own 'hate list's about professions in Turkey. Students are expected to get plenty of opportunities for listening and speaking practice.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will start the lesson greeting and explaining she is annoyed. T will show a letter from HMRC and use pictures to elicit : tax inspector and traffic warden, Do you think I am happy to receive this letter? Do they work for the government? Yes Do they check your account? Sometimes, yes. Do I know who wrote this letter personally? No. Maybe he is a nice person but do I like them? There is no equivalent of a traffic warden in Turkey, DO We have the same job here ? Who does the job here? Traffic police.. Are they the people who help you park your car? No Do we like them generally? Maybe, maybe not.. Show pictures / elicit

Pre-Reading/Listening (2-3 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T sets Gist task. We are going to listen to the beginning of a survey.. Can you tell me where the conversation is held and what's it about? Is it about jobs?

While-Reading/Listening #1/1st half for Gist (4-5 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T plays until 2.28 min, Elicits radio programme, top 10 most hated jobs; ELICIT list, draw one and write no.1 elicit the answer

Pre-Listening (4-5 minutes) • to introduce and pre-teach vocal for the 2nd half of the text

T sets clear groupings, talk about the jobs/ people you don't like in your groups. How about the people who are trying to sell something over the phone! Elicit telesales reps, TEACH 'cold caller' bouncers, to bounce? people who turn you away from the door.. Nightclub bouncers/ security in Turkey Are they usually male? Yes Do they wear suits?Yes Are they well-built or skinny ? well-built Mark the stress on the first word! how about the real bad people, evil, Elicit / teach villain

While-Reading/Listening #2 (4-5 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

While-Listening no.3/whole text (7-8 minutes) • to provide more detailed listening and comprehension
