Abc Worksheets

Main Aims

  • Students accurately identify past continuous, past simple, and 2nd conditional structures.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Students complete song-based activities effectively.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (8-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Song Introduction: Play the first 30 seconds of a song rich in conditionals and ask: “What do you think the song is about?” “What type of sentences do you hear?” Introduce the concept of the 2nd conditional used in songs to express hypotheticals.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (18-20 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Song Activity – Lyric Gap-Fill (20 min) Play the song (or the relevant section). Students complete missing words related to the 2nd conditional. Discussion: How is the 2nd conditional used in the song?

While-Reading/Listening #2 (18-20 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Audio Clip: A casual conversation between two vets discussing a stressful day. Comprehension Questions: “What was happening when the problem occurred?” “What would they have done differently?” “What advice does one vet give the other?” Structure Identification: Students underline all past continuous, past simple, and 2nd conditional statements in the transcript.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Pair Work: Students discuss how they would have handled the situations described in the audio clip. Students share their thoughts using the 2nd conditional.
