Procedure (82-90 minutes)
Question on board: “What were you doing when...” Students discuss in pairs and share responses. Briefly explain the difference between: Past Continuous: Describes ongoing actions. (I was treating a dog…) Past Simple: Describes completed actions. (…when the owner called me.)
Flashcard Activity: Flashcards with sentence starters like: “I was examining a cat when…” “The owner called while I was…” “We were preparing the surgery when…” Students complete the sentences using past simple or past continuous.
Role-Play: Incident Reports Scenario Cards: Each group receives a card describing a veterinary incident with missing details. Students must complete the story using the past continuous and past simple. Example Scenario: “You were treating a dog for an infection when the power went out.” Students present their incident reports to the class. Open Discussion (20 min) Students discuss any topic of their choice, but are encouraged to use the past continuous and past simple when describing past events.
