Description

In this lesson, students will have the opportunity to learn new vocabulary within the context of names and their meanings. They will also listen to five people talking about their names and they will practice listening for gist, specific information and detail. After that, as a main aim for this lesson, the students will have the opportunity to discuss their opinions regarding various issues related to the concept of "names".

Main Aims

  • To give students practice in listening for gist, specific information and detail.
  • To give students practice in speaking within the context of the "names".

Subsidiary Aims

  • To learn new vocabularies within the context of "names"

Procedure

Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will show students some names. These names, if pronounced quickly or naturally, will sound funny. T will help Ss with the first one Ss should guess why the other names are funny.

Vocabulary (Pre-Teaching) (4-5 minutes) • To familiarize students with difficult vocabulary items related to the concept of discussion.

T will give Ss the new vocabulary HOs T will ask them to fold the HO T will ask Ss to individually read the sentences and to guess the meanings WC feedback will be provided

Listening for Gist (4-5 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist listening.

Ss will listen to five people talking about their names Ss will decide which names from the previous Ex. these people are referring to

Listening for Details (9-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening.

Ss will listen to the recordings again Ss will match the given topics in the HO with the speakers T will give Ss another HO with more detailed questions Ss will listen one more time and answer the questions in groups.

Follow-up (Speaking) (15-20 minutes) • To provide students with freer speaking practice.

Teacher will ask Ss to look at the topics at the bottom of HO Ss will choose two topics Ss will work in groups and discuss the questions Teacher will get FB
