Main Aims

  • Students will be able to accurately read and pronounce words with the short vowel I phonic

Subsidiary Aims

  • New words: big, bin, lip, sit, six

Procedure

Warm-up Video (2-4 minutes) • To get students focused and ready to learn.

Play a video for the students to dance to.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Introduce and model the phonic Elicit the focused sound. Add words and sound them out. Play heads up. Students put their heads in sleep mode until they hear teacher say a phonic word. When the teacher does students put their heads up and point to the word in the room which the teacher moves during sleep.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Play a phonic video off YouTube. Ask a reward students who can remember more words.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Play egg race Students will try to carry an egg on the spoon (by hand) while saying that price of the word. For example: big, the first egg they chant b, the second i, the third g, and lastly the word. First player to get all their eggs in the basket wins.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Play musical word building Have students pass around letter cards while a song plays. When the music stops a word will appear, maybe with a number if you have copies of the same letter, and students holding the correct letters to spell the word run to the board and put them in order with their team. The first team wins.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Pair work puzzles Students have a student set of picture cards for the vocals and letter puzzle cards, one student will draw a picture card then both race to build then say the word. The faster student keeps the picture card. If neither student is faster put the card back in the stack and play again.
