Description

Students will improve their pronunciation of challenging English sounds, particularly those that differ significantly from Spanish.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (8-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Tongue Twister Game: Students attempt English tongue twisters to relax and prepare for focused pronunciation. Example: “She sells seashells by the seashore.”

Identification & Practice (20 min) (18-20 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks

Focus Sounds: /b/ vs. /v/ (e.g., vet vs. bet) /ʃ/ vs. /s/ (e.g., sheep vs. ship) /ɪ/ vs. /iː/ (e.g., live vs. leave) Activity: Minimal pairs worksheet - Students listen and identify correct sounds. Practice: Students repeat words and sentences focusing on the target sounds.

While-Reading/Listening (13-15 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Audio Clips: Phrases containing minimal pairs. Students choose the correct word based on what they hear. Example: “Did you say live or leave?” “Was it vet or bet?”

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Students read short passages aloud, focusing on proper pronunciation. Instructor provides correction and feedback.

Feedback and Error Correction (3-5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Instructor highlights common pronunciation mistakes and provides strategies for improvement.
