Main Aims

  • Students will be able to convert direct speech into reported speech using appropriate tense changes.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Improve students' awareness of verb changes in reported speech.
  • Encourage accuracy and fluency in reporting conversations.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Did you hear? (The Gossip Game)

Presentation (8-10 minutes) • To introduce reported speech

Teacher writes the direct quote from the gossip on the board and elicits how to report it from what was said during the game. Ss go through the brief explanation and examples from the book (page 30).

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Gap-fill exercise: students rewrite direct speech into reported speech. Peer-check answers.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Marching activity: students match direct speech to correct reported speech form.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Role-play: students talk about their day/week in pairs. One student reports what the other "said" in their conversation.

Group Feeback & Correction (3-5 minutes) • To address students' errors

Teacher provides group feedback on common mistakes heard during students' presentations. Students peer-check and self-correct.
