Abc History of Animal Nutrition excerpt

Main Aims

  • To expand student vocabulary and comprehension of technical texts related to their field.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To enable students to discuss written ideas confidently and accurately.

Procedure

Pre-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

- Ask Ss what they know about animal nutrition & habits. - Display main points elicited on board and tell Ss they will be looking for these and related/similar concepts & words in the text.

Reading task (20-25 minutes) • To enrich Ss vocabulary on topic & familiarize them with written/formal language within their specialty.

- Ss take turns for first reading while they take notes of special phrases and important vocabulary. - Second reading will place emphasis on Ss' comprehension of main ideas, which they then summarize to rest of class in turns. - Start more detailed discussion around topic including related procedures/methods & further points Ss can offer.

Highlighting (18-20 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the task language

- Focus on particular points in the text that Ss found challenging, eliciting answers & suitable equivalents (synonyms, descriptions); T compares formal/academic language with know expressions for better comprehension. - Highlight more difficult pronunciation using other examples and suitable patterns to allow Ss to improve their general use and understanding of written language. - Ask Ss to skim through the text one last time & choose a part that they learned something new from. - Conclude by asking Ss to mention the exact phrase or idea that drew their attention to their partner, quoting adequately and referring to the text in a clear and confident manner.
