To provide clarification and practice of past simple and past continuous in the context of story of a railway driver

To provide gist reading practice using a text about the story of Casey Jones
Procedure (30-46 minutes)
. put the picture of Casey Jones on WB . tell his story to the sts. . talk about the song his friend wrote for him and listen to the song from youtube: 'the ballad of casey jones lyrics"
. Sts read the passage and answer the questions.
. Write different sentences (split sentences into two) on pieces of paper . put them on WB . sts match them.
. write these on pieces of paper and put them on WB PAST SIMPLE: . for past actions, states or facts . for repeated or usual actions PAST CONTINUOUS: . to talk about events which were in progress . Sts match these and them give examples for each point.
. Use WB to clarify the structure. . try to elicit from the sts the structure. . Use timelines to establish the meaning.
. draw a picture of a person cooking. elicit that this is john at 7 pm. . draw a phone and indicate it is ringing . ask sts to put these in a sentence. . draw some more pictures; marie was playing golf when it started raining. The children were walking to school when Graca fell over.
