Description

In this lesson, the students will read about a famous scientist and learn new vocabulary within this context. They will read a text about Galileo Galilei, using gist, putting events in order, and doing specific reading tasks. They will follow this up with vocabulary practice and speaking activity related to the overall context of the lesson.

Main Aims

  • To practice reading for gist, deduction and specific information (in a text about a famous scientist)

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide opportunity to students to learn new vocabulary and practice speaking fluency

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context (introduce new topic) and engage students

T will play a short music clip from Big Bang theory sitcom and ask students if they recognize it T will ask students about subjects they studied in school and relate that to the topic of science T will show pictures of different famous people and elicit from students their names and how are they similar (scientists)

Pre-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To engage students in the topic and prepare them for the reading activity

SS will play a game with the words (ex. hangman) in pairs (A-B), as As need to guess the missing letters and find out the words and tell it to Bs SS talk to each other if they know anything about these theories T to give handout with matching definition exercise for the theories SS work in pairs to complete task and compare answers with the WC

While-Reading #1 (8-10 minutes) • Students to do gist reading and complete specific information reading task (events in correct order)

T instruct Ss to read text one time and think about one question (which is the theory they can find from ex. 1?) T to split class in groups of 3 students SS to work in groups to put paragraphs in correct order (give cut outs) SS from 2 different groups to put answers on white board SS to check with WC

Vocabulary (4-6 minutes) • To introduce new words from the context necessary for the next tasks in the lesson

Ss to look at words in bold in the text and see if they can guess the meaning T to give out handout with the definitions and the words in a box underneath T to give instructions by using an example with the first definition Ss working in pairs to match the words to the definition Ss to share answers with WC Drilling T to give answer key to students

While-Reading #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more detailed and deduction reading tasks

T to split students in groups of 4 (number grouping) Ss to read text alone (full text handout) Ss to work in groups to answer questions Ss to share answers with WC T to monitor work within groups T to feedback if any problems

Post-Reading (4-6 minutes) • Students to use new vocabulary and get some speaking practice

T to give instructions and confirm with ICQs Ss to take turns and re-tell each other one of the six paragraphs from the text Ss can ask questions to each other on these paragraphs T to monitor speaking based on the context of the lesson T to check understanding of words using action for some of them as wrap up
