Materials

Abc Prompt handout, projector, board.

Main Aims

  • Reinforce & give Ss practice of conditionals (0, 1, 2) in context.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Enable students to gain flexibility and confidence when speaking

Procedure

Lead-in/Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of the task and highlight useful words and phrases

- Briefly elicit examples of different conditionals from Ss, placing emphasis on present/future combinations before moving on to 'would', 'could', 'had', 'was/were' during the second period of the class. - Give out prompts to be completed for practice.

Productive Task(s) (22-25 minutes) • To allow students to use what they have learned in appropriate contexts.

FOR EACH PERIOD: - Read the exercises in the prompts out loud together with students, randomly asking them to fill out the blanks. - Now, have them write more sentences individually using daily examples of their own to be read aloud.

Highlighting/Oral Practice (18-20 minutes) • To provide a model of the task and highlight key phrases & ideas used with conditionals.

FOR EACH PERIOD: - Review & reinforce use by summarizing the formation of each conditional category, reminding Ss of typical situations where these would be employed. - For oral practice and to improve their confidence, test Ss by having them verbally give each other a lead-in phrase in pairs, allowing the other to complete the sentence/idea using a suitable conditional.
