Procedure (82-90 minutes)
Warmer/Lead-in (10 min) Write on the board: "What do you do if a dog stops breathing?" Students discuss in pairs and share responses. Introduce zero and first conditionals with examples: Zero conditional (general truth): "If a dog eats chocolate, it gets sick." First conditional (specific situations): "If you give him activated charcoal, he will feel better."
Activity: Matching Conditionals Students receive two halves of a sentence and match them correctly. Example: "If a cat is bleeding, ..." → "... apply pressure to the wound." Pair Practice: Complete the sentence Instructor gives half a sentence, students complete it using correct conditionals. Example: "If a pet has a fever, ..."
Role playing Emergency Situations (40 min) Small Groups: Each group gets an emergency scenario. Example: "A dog was hit by a car." One student plays the owner, the other plays the veterinarian. Students must: Ask and answer questions. Give clear instructions using conditionals. Speaking Challenge & Discussion (15 min) Structured Debate: "Should pet owners be required to take a first aid course?" Students must use at least three conditionals in their argument.
