Main Aims

  • Students will be able to describe animals with basic adjectives.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Grammar: The snake is long.
  • Review Words: crocodile, elephant, giraffe, hippo, lion, monkey, snake, tiger, zebra
  • New Words: small – big, slow – quick, young – old, long – short

Procedure

Warm Up Video (3-5 minutes) • To get students focused and ready to learn

Students will dance to a video to burn some energy and settle for learning.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Review Animals Introduce New Words. Find something in the classroom Students will listen to the teacher and try to find something that matches the adjectives. Prompt the structure, "It's _____."

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Change the structure from It's to The animal is _____. Have some students talk about animals they like.

Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Play Telepathy Show an Adjective and 2 animals. Let students choose one side or the other to see if they can guess what answer the teacher has chosen.

Semi-Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Show a picture of an animal and present adjectives. Let students make sentences with these adjectives for different point values. The words will disappear and can't be used again.

Extended Practice (8-10 minutes) • To allow students to demonstrate their abilities.
