Speaking Tuesday March 25
A1-B1 Vets level

Description

Students will use connectors (e.g., "because," "however," "therefore," "in addition") to form complete and complex sentences and improve fluency in spoken English.

Materials

Main Aims

  • Students correctly use connectors in structured and unstructured speech.
  • Students create fluent, connected responses using target vocabulary.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Students participate actively in conversations and discussions using connectors naturally.

Procedure

Lead in/ Exposure (13-15 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students, To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Write on the board: "I love my job. I don’t like the long hours." Ask: "How can we connect these ideas?" Elicit responses and introduce key connectors ("but," "however," "because," "so," "in addition," "therefore"). Quick Pair Activity: Give each student two unrelated sentences. They must use a connector to join them logically. Example: "I like working with animals. / Sometimes they can be unpredictable." Possible answer: "I like working with animals, but sometimes they can be unpredictable."

Useful Language (18-20 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Instructor provides example sentences with different connectors. Flashcard Challenge: Instructor holds up a connector (e.g., "however"). A student must use it correctly in a sentence. Other students decide if the sentence is correct or suggest improvements. Small Group Practice: Each group receives a list of simple sentences and must join them using appropriate connectors. Example: "The clinic is very busy. / We need to work efficiently." Possible answer: "The clinic is very busy, so we need to work efficiently."

Productive Task(s) (43-45 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Game Show Style Quiz (similar to past lessons) Students are given two simple sentences and must connect them correctly. Example: Sentence 1: "I love my dog." Sentence 2: "He always follows me around." Correct response: "I love my dog because he always follows me around." Bonus Round: Students chain sentences in a group, each adding a connector. Example: Student 1: "I like dogs." Student 2: "I like dogs because they are loyal." Student 3: "They are loyal, so they make great pets." Structured Debate: Students choose between two opposing ideas and must use connectors in their arguments. Pair Work First: Students prepare their responses. Whole-Class Debate: Groups present their arguments, using at least three connectors. Speaking Relay One student starts a sentence. The next must continue it using a connector. The goal: Create a 5-6 sentence connected paragraph as a class.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Students write and say one sentence using at least two connectors. Instructor provides individual feedback, correcting errors and reinforcing strong examples. Group Reflection: What was easy? What was difficult? What will they practice more?
