Main Aims

  • Students will be able to understand the present progressive tense.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Review Words: crocodile, elephant, giraffe, hippo, lion, monkey, snake, tiger, zebra
  • Grammar: Are you + V-ing? ~Yes, I am./ No, I'm not. | Is + S + V-ing? Yes, it is./ No, it's not.

Procedure

Warm Up Video (2-4 minutes) • To get students focused and ready to learn

Play a video that the students would enjoy dancing to.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Review Verbs and Animals Review the -ing ending from Unit 8. Practice with the recycled structure. What is the ___ doing? It is ____ing.

Structure Review (2-4 minutes) • To draw student focus to the target structure.

Teacher will put the structures on the board and have students guess the Yes/ No answers.

Highlighting (4-6 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Play a guessing video game. The video shows singular animals doing various activities but the pictures are covered and only some of the pictures can be seen. The students will guess the using the question format Is the ___ ___ing? After when we reveal the picture the students will make answers with Yes, it is. and No, it isn't.

Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Play choose your prize Students race to answer the sentence. The winner will get to choose a box to open and take that many stars.

Semi-Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Play Hoop HopScotch. The teacher lines up some hoops in a random pattern. If there are 2 hoops side by side you put down 2 feet but if only one just one foot. The teacher will have hung pictures over each of the hoop rows. There will be two players who race to the middle hopping and chanting the answer. Once they reach each other they rock paper scissors and the winner gets as many stars as the hoops they jumped thru.

Free Practice (6-8 minutes) • To allow students to demonstrate their knowledge.
