-
The main aim of this lesson is integrated skills- reading and speaking. Ss will have the opportunity to speak about what they read through a jigsaw reading activity with two texts. My lesson also sets the context for all three sessions.
Subsidiary Aims
-
To introduce related vocabulary.
Procedure (37-49 minutes)
Get Ss interested in the topic, e.g., show Ss a glass (or a picture of a glass) that is half-filled with water to elicit the "half full" or "half empty"- and elicit optimistic or pessimistic (Ss should know these words).
Show Ss the title "All's wel that ends well." Ss. discuss in pairs/small groups what they think it means and if it is optimistic or pessimistic in meaning. Take FB. Ask Ss if they think most people are optimists or pessimists. Take general FB.
Divide the class into two groups A & B. The students will read about two people who answer the question "What are you optimistic about. Reading Ex1- Ss read about their person and check the answers. Ss check their answer with their group- I will help as needed, but I won't do any FB at this stage.
Regroup the Ss so they are in pairs of 1xA & 1xB. Ss tell each other about the person that they read about.
Choose 5-6 words from reading texts A & B that you think will be new for the Ss. Prepare a handout with these words and some simple definitions. Ss work in pairs/small groups to match the words with the definitions using the texts to help them. Give FB, answer questions deal with problems.
Give the Ss the question in ex2 and "What are you optimistic about?" Ss will discuss in pairs/small groups-take some general FB.
