Main Aims

  • Improve listening comprehension by identifying main ideas and details.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Recognize past simple tense structures in a spoken story.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Have students predict some vocabulary they might hear

Pre-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Ask students to write down three questions they hope the story will answer.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (18-20 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Students write down key events and any past simple verbs they hear. Stop at key points and ask: “What do you think will happen next?” Comprehension Questions: Who are the main characters? What happens in the middle of the story? How do you think the story ends?

Post-Reading/Listening (13-15 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Pair Discussion: Have you ever experienced a similar situation? How do you feel the story should end? Class Debate: Should people always help stray animals? Why or why not?

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Students write down one sentence summarizing the story in their own words. Instructor Feedback: Clarify any vocabulary or pronunciation issues from the discussion.
