Description

In this lesson students will review simple past of be in affirmative, negative, yes-no questions and short answers. Sts will have plenty of time to practice the TL. Finally sts will personalize the use of TL in the context of looking back and discuss.

Main Aims

  • To provide review and practice of simple past of be (affirmative, negative and question) in the context of looking back.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide freer speaking practice of TL in the context of looking back.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will show visuals of some children in the first day of school. T will ask sts "What do you see in this picture?" and elicit "the first day of school" T will also ask "Was she/he happy or nervous or scared?" and elicit the answers. T will clarify nervous and scared. She will highlight the TL at this stage.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Form: Aff: He was nervous. Neg: He wasn't nervous. (highlight wasn't instead of was not.) Q: Was he nervous? Yes, he was / No, he wasn't. (highlight short answer instead of he was nervous.) Meaning: Draw a time line if necessary. CQs: Is he nervous now? NO CQs: Was it in the past? YES Pronunciation: was and were in weak forms in Affirmative and Negative; but they are stressed in short negative answers.

Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Project the activity on WB. Instructions: -Fill in the blanks with was/wasn't/were/weren't. -First alone -Check with your partner ICQ: Can you write is/are? NO FB (nominate sts)

Semi-Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Project the activity on WB. Instructions: Fill in the blanks with past simple "to be" question/short answer Use the words given. First alone Then check with your partner. ICQ: Can you use any other word? no WCFB
