Description

In this lesson, the students will learn some new vocabulary words from the story (The Three Little Pigs). It’s an integrated lesson that will focus on the major skills in English (reading, writing, listening, speaking and drama acting. Gaining insight into different types of materials, such as: straw, wood, brick (Science). The teacher engages the students with activities that captures their attention, develops their critical thinking and prompts the students with questions to activate their knowledge, explains vocabulary words using flash cards and visual aids. The students will read the story, complete the activity sheet then watch and listen to a video of the story to enhance their understanding followed by solving different sequencing activities. Then the students will practice building they story sentences and suggesting an alternative ending to the story to enhance their writing skill and to elevate their creativity. Finally, the students will act out the story to check their understanding and comprehension skills. The teacher will provide the students with bookmarks with theme of the story as a reward for their efforts. As the children have different skills and abilities, the teacher will provide colouring sheets related to the story and crayons in the extended work station for those who finish their tasks early at any time.

Main Aims

  • By the end of this lesson, the students will be able to identify and practice the meaning of the new words, analyse the story characters, plot, settings elicit the morals of the story.

Subsidiary Aims

  • The students will practice reading, listening and writing skills. The students understand the sequencing events of the story and are able to recall and write simple sentences about the story. They can suggest different ending for the story.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-Teacher hides stuffed animal toys (three pigs and a wolf), some materials (Straw, Brick, Wood), each with a small pouch around the classroom. -Teacher asks SS to go for a scavenger hunt around the classroom - Teacher asks SS to find the hidden pouches. -Teacher asks the SS to sit around the carpet and to place the small pouches in the middle of the carpet. - Teacher opens each pouch to show the SS what is inside. - Teacher asks the Students to identify each item on the carpet.

Pre-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Teacher will ask the SS to get back to their seats. Teacher will start the lesson by hanging an A3 printed copy of the story book cover on the whiteboard, T will stick the banner of the story on top of the board. Teacher will Start eliciting the SS and ask them questions. T will ask SS the following questions: 1) What can you see on the cover? 2) What do think the story is about? 3) What’s the title of the story? 4) How many animals/characters are on the cover? 5) What do you know about pigs? 6) Have you heard about this story before? 7) Can you describe the pig? 8) What does the pig eat? 9) Where do the pigs live? 10) Can you see the Wolf?

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

-Teacher will read the story loudly and use expressions with different voice tones. Pause at key points and ask. -What do you think will happen next? -How do you think the characters feel? -T will stick the vocabulary flashcards of the story on the whiteboard, discuss it with SS to allow them Identify new words and discuss their meanings. -T will give each S a handout of the story and a highlighter, then ask the students to read the story and highlight words that are challenging for them. - After reading, T will ask the SS to identify the meaning of the highlighted words through the vocabulary flashcards. -T will ask the SS to say their highlighted words and the meanings they recognized. -T will allow the SS to give their feedback on their classmates’ work. -T will give the SS clear instructions to work individually on the vocabulary worksheet, to stick the pre- cutout pictures on top of the right words. -T will monitor the SS while they are working to make sure that they are working following the given instructions. -T will ask SS to exchange feedbacks. -T feedback.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

- Teacher will play (The Three Little Pigs) short story video on the smart board. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zobcwetN-L0 -Teacher will ask the SS to watch/listen and pay attention to the story elements while watching. -Teacher will ask SS: -Where did the story take place? -What happened at the end of the story? - What do they learn from the story? - What do they like or didn’t like about the story? - Are they happy by the end of the story? -After watching the video, the teacher will divide the students into two groups of mixed abilities GW, group 1 and group 2, each group will sit at one round table. -Teacher will give group 1 clear instructions to discuss the story elements, then solve story elements matching worksheet by sticking the pre-cut cards under the right heading together. -Teacher will give group 2 clear instructions to discuss the sequence of the story and solve the story map activity by sticking the pre-cut cards on the right place according the sequence of the story together. -Teacher will monitor the SS while they are working to check their understanding and to make sure that they are following the given instructions. -Teacher will ask each group to give feedback on the other group's work. -Teacher feedback. .

Post-Reading/Listening (10-14 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

-Teacher will divide the SS into 3 groups (Group A - Group B- Group C) GW, making sure of each group contains SS with different abilities / academic level, each group will sit at one table. -Teacher will ask group (A) to practice sentences building cards activity of The Three Little Pigs story. -Teacher will give clear instructions to group (A) to rearrange the cards to build the right sentences according to the story. -Teacher will ask group (B) to solve The Three Little Pigs alternative ending A3 worksheet together. -Teacher will give clear instructions to group (B) to solve the sheet and reply to the written questions by suggesting an alternative ending to the story and write it on the sheet along with drawing pictures that matches what they wrote in the empty squares. -Teacher will provide group C with the script of three little pigs story and asks the SS of the group to review it together and assign roles. -Teacher will retell the instructions to make sure that SS understood their tasks. - Teacher will monitor SS while they are working to give them the needed guidance and support. -As the SS have different abilities, they may finish their tasks in different times, The student who finishes early may draw his/her favourite character using his/her small whiteboard and markers. -Teacher will review their work. - Teacher feedback. -When all the groups are done Teacher will provide group C with characters face masks and asks them to act out the story while they are standing on the carpet to enhance their understanding and check their comprehension skills, while groups A and B will be the audience sitting in a circle around the carpet. - SS feed backs on the role paly. - Teacher will provide each student with story themed bookmark as a reward for their efforts.
