Main Aims

  • To provide gist in the context of a conversation between a doctor and a patient

Subsidiary Aims

  • To introduce and reinforce vocabulary related to health and well-being. To encourage students to discuss their own health habits.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show students images of different healthy activities (e.g., exercising, eating fruits, sleeping, drinking water). In pairs, students discuss: "What do you do to stay healthy?" "Which of these activities do you do regularly?" Feedback: Students share ideas with the class.

Pre-Reading/Listening (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

1.Pre-teach key vocabulary using the worksheet. Students match words to their meanings. Word/Phrase Definition Balanced diet Eating a variety of nutritious foods Hydration Drinking enough water Sedentary lifestyle Sitting too much, not moving enough Nutrients Substances in food that help our bodies grow Metabolism The process by which our bodies use energy 2.Pair-check and whole-class feedback.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

1. Set the task: Listen to a conversation between a doctor and a patient. What is the main advice the doctor gives? (Choose from: diet, exercise, or sleep). 2. Play the audio once. 3. Pair-check and discuss answers. 4.Whole-class feedback.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (12-15 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

1. Students read 5 comprehension questions: What does the doctor say about sugar? How much exercise does the doctor recommend per week? What is the importance of hydration? Why is sleep important for health? What advice does the patient find difficult to follow? 2. Play the audio again. 3. Students answer the questions individually. 4. Pair-check and whole-class discussion.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

1. In groups, students discuss: Which of the doctor’s health tips do you already follow? What changes would you like to make in your daily routine? 2. Groups present key points from their discussion. 3. The teacher monitors and provides feedback.
