Speaking - Skill Lesson

Description

In this lesson students will practice speaking skill with the cinema context. As a warm up the class will have a chat about movies and cinema. T will introduce two movies and will ask ss to choose one of them individually as a controlled activity. In the first stage of the semi controlled activity, groups will negotiate and decide on a movie to see in the cinema. The second stage of the activity is to agree on a date in which they go to the cinema together.

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a negotiation in the context of Cinema

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice taking turn in a conversation, To practice talking about movie preferences by using time expressions
  • To pracitice taking turn in a conversationtalk about movie prefernces and using time expressions

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T asks ss some questions about the context Q1: Do you like watching movies? Q2: Do you go to the cinema?

Elicit- Introduce language for task (4 minutes) • To provide a focus on speaking task

T showes the trailers of the movies. She asks: Q1: Have you seen those movies? Q2: Do you like them?

Preparation Time (2 minutes) • To prepare the class to the speaking task. To give ss a thinking time.

T gives the instructions of the individual work: You will go to the cinema, choose one of these movies and think why do you choose it. Ss write or think the movie that they want to watch in a cinema and the reasons of choosing it individually and silently. T monitors the class and asks some of the ss which movie they have picked after the activity.

Speaking- Task1 (3-4 minutes) • To provide practice in speaking for fluency. To provide an oppurtunity to practice negotiation and taking turn in a conversation.

T assigns the groups of three. She gives the instructions: You'll go to the cinema together. You need to decide on a movie. As a group choose your movie. T asks ICQs: Can you go to the cinema individually? -No. How many movies will you choose? - One. Ss work on the task. Whole class feedback. Groups talk about the reasons of choosing their movie.

Speaking- Task2 (8-10 minutes) • To increase language production. To provide feedback on students' production

T chests the handouts and gives instructions: This is your time table. Do you know what it is? She explains: Here your plans to do in a week are written. (No matter eliciting answers) You will decide when you will go to the cinema. All group members will come to the cinema. T models the activity with one of the ss T asks some ICQs: ICQ1:Can you decide the time on your own? - No ICQ2: What will you do with the time tables? - Finding a free time to go to the cinema. T distrubutes the handouts. Ss work on the task. T monitors the groups.

Feedback on Content (1 minutes) • To highlight the ss's communicative achievement.

When the groups complete the task T gives the cinema tickets to the groups. Ss fill in the blanks by writing their names, the chosen movie and the date on the ticket.
