Description

In this lesson, students will be taught USED TO structure with guided discovery through a text. Teacher sets the context. students will skim the text and then read the text for detail and then teacher will introduce the target language in meaningful context. Students will be taught a grammar in MFP order of the target language. At the end, they will work on production skill in the form a freer practice and there is an error correction stage at the end as a WCFB.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of used to in the context of driving car

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of driving car

Procedure

Lead-in (1-2 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher will put a question on the board and asks students to talk about it in pairs. Did you like to drive a when you were a child? FB: elicit some responses

Exposure (gist task) (2-3 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text by skimming

Teacher will say that students have 30 second to skim the text and choose if the text is related to the past or future. (Handouts are on the desk) Students will check the answers in pairs. FB: Teacher will elicit the true answer with the reason in the text.

Presentation (detailed task) (3-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language in a meaningful context

Teacher will ask students to unfold their handouts, read the text again and choose true or false with their partner and underline where they find the answer in the text in two minutes. FB: Teacher will elicit answers, put them on the board and will elicit the target language from the text and write them as a model on the board.

Clarification (13-18 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Teacher will give them handouts with the same two sentences of the text (they are also on the board) and asks them to answer three questions about them with the group in one minute. Teacher will ICQ them. Then teacher will use the answers for explaining meaning, also she will use a timeline. (Meaning) and CCQ students. Next teacher will write the exact structure (form) with another color for negative, positive and question form. Teacher drills choral pronunciation from the class (pronunciation) for positive and negative forms (back chaining). If time, students will look again at the text and underline other examples of the target language.

Controlled Practice (4-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students will be given a handout and they should rewrite the sentences (past tense) with the target language (used to) in three minutes. They will check in pairs and teacher gives them answer key. FB: talk about the reasons of some answers

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language and personalise it and finding errors

Teacher will put a question on the board: What did you used to do in the past? and answers the question about herself. Students will stand up, find a partner and talk about it accurately with writing one of the sentences they like. Teacher will monitor and take note from their errors. If time, teacher will put the paper around the class and students will read them. FB: Students will talk about interesting sentences in the class

Whole Class Feedback (2-3 minutes) • To correct students' errors

Teacher will write incorrect sentences on the board and asks them to think about the correct form of it. They will check their answer together. They will tell the correct answer and teacher will write them on the board.
