Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed reading practice using a text about facts and myths about foods in the context of eating and drinking

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and review of food lexis in the context of eating and drinking
  • To provide speaking practice for fluency in the context of eating and drinking

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show them some realia (lemon, apple, hamburger,etc.) related to the context of the lesson and ask them to guess the topic of the lesson. Elicit "food". Write food onto the w/b and elicit some foods. Ask them to write the words onto the w/b. Get Ss to talk about their favourite food with their partners. Get w/c feedback

Pre-Reading (11-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Ask Ss to work in pairs and match the pictures with the words. Each pair will have six pictures and six words (if they are small in number, they can also stick them on the walls) Get them check their answers with other pairs (peer-checking) Demonstrate the ctivity before they start. Show them the answer key through the projector on the w/b Focus on meaning by asking CCQs and using realia. Model and drill the target language. Ask Ss to work in small groups and discuss which foods contain vitamins/ protein/ a lot of calories. Demonstrate the activity before they start. Get w/c feedback. Ask Ss to think about the ideas given. Tell them to decide if they agree or not. Get them share their ideas with their partners. Demonstrate the activity before they start. Get w/c feedback

While-Reading #1 (7-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

Tell Ss to read the text very quickly and match the ideas to the paragraphs. Demonstrate the activity before they start. Ask them to check their answers with their partner (peer-checking) Get w/c feedback.

While-Reading #2 (10-11 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed reading tasks

Ask them to read the text again and work in pairs and decide if the given sentences are true or false. Demonstrate the activity before they start. Get them compare their answers with other pairs. Tell them to check their answers against the keys on the walls. Ask some further questions about the statements to check their understanding. (e.g., What can you eat as a healthy snack?, Is it important to eat vegetables and why?, Can you see in the dark if you eat carrots?,etc)

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Show them the picture of a headgun made of junk foods such as burgers, chocolate bars, cookies,etc. Ask them to discuss what the picture means to them, whether they like it or not in small groups. Get w/c feedback.
