Main Aims
-
To provide listening practise in the context of clothes.
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide clarification and of lexis, followed by speaking fluency.
Procedure (37-45 minutes)
Greet the class. Start by asking, "Do you enjoy buying new clothes?" "What kind of clothes do you like to wear?". Ss describe someone they know who dresses well and someone who doesn't dress well. Ss work in pairs. Get FB.
Show slide show of mixed patterns and fabrics. Give clear instructions. Ss work together to organise it into words for fabric and words for patterns. Ss see answer key and and check. Then drill. (Tell Ss to take notes of new lexis). Group/pair work. Get W/C FB.
Ss listen to the recording to make a list of patterns, fabrics and clothes that they hear. Give clear instructions, "Listen to the audio of two people, a man and a woman shopping at the mall and talking about clothes". Ask CCQ's, "What will you listen for?" "Do you need to understand every word?". Ss work individually, give HO. Get W/C FB. Ss write the answers on the board. Check answers with class. (Listen twice if needed).
Ss listen to the recording again and this time write down the clothes the speakers liked and didn't like in the audio and listen for their opinions. Give clear instructions. Ask CCQ's, "What are you listening for?" "Are we listening about fashion or clothes?". Ss work individually and check answers with peers. Get W/C FB. Check with class. Ask, "How did Mandy feel about buying clothes?" "How did Rick feel?".
Give clear instructions and demonstrate this task. Ss will use vocabulary from stage 2. Ss work in groups to prepare a brief description of a couple of other Ss in the class. They then read their descriptions to the class – but DON’T say the name of the S. The other groups then guess which S they are talking about. If time permits, Ss discuss general attitudes to clothes shopping of men and women and if they are the same as the speakers.
Write misused lexis and grammar on the board and elicit answers from Ss. Show the correct answers. Praise for good work.
