Upper-intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students will be introduced to different modals and phrases from a previous reading text with getting to know what they are used for. They will do four tasks that examine different modals' forms and their different uses. They will listen to a story about alternative therapies and make notes about the main events in it. They will note down the key words in the story. In pairs/ small groups, they will try to rewrite the story using their notes.

Main Aims

  • To provide grammar practice to modals & phrases to express permission, obligation & prohibition

  • To provide listening & speaking practice to modals & phrases that express permission, obligation & prohibition.

Procedure

Warmer/ lead in (5 minutes) • to get the students into the topic of the lesson

Write this sentence on the board " we had to make sure we didn't disrupt the day to day work of the office." Ask students about what " had to " mean. Ask students if they can use any other words to fit the same meaning " obligation " , ex: needed to, were obliged to.

Rewrite the sentences (6-8 minutes) • To get the students fluent with the meanings of permission, obligation & prohibition using different modals and phrases

Show the students the handouts. Tell them to work in pairs. Tell them they are going to rewrite the sentences using the appropriate form of the verbs in the box. Give them about 6 minutes to answer. Ask some students to read the sentences they wrote.

Matching the sentences (5-7 minutes) • To get students to know the the meanings & uses of the phrases they practiced in the previous exercise.

Tell students to stay in the same pairs. Tell them to match the sentences in the previous with the uses they have in exercise 2 they have in the bottom of the handout they have with them. Give students 4 minutes to finish. Get some students to go to WB to write the correct answers.

Gap-fill (7-9 minutes) • To get the students to know how to express each use of permission, obligation, lack of obligation & prohibotion

Put students in different pairs than the ones they worked in previously. Show students the handouts. Tell them they are going to fill in the gaps. Give them 4 minutes to answer. Get some students to & write the answers on the board. Write on the board different phrases where " to " is used and where it isn't

Choosing the best form (5-6 minutes) • To provide more practice to the students on the different uses of modals & expression

Put students in groups of 3. Show them the handouts. Tell them to choose the correct form in the passage in the task. Give students 4 minutes to finish. Take WC FB

Listening practice (10-12 minutes) • To practice listening and provide the grammatical items in a realistic context

Tell students they will listen to a story about alternative therapists. Tell them to make notes about the main events of the story. play the story. Tell students to discuss their ideas about the main events of the story in pairs. Tell students they will listen to the story again, ask them to write down the key words. Students listen to the story again.

Write the story (10 minutes) • To use the TL and rewrite a story they listened to

Put students in pairs. Tell them to rewrite the story they listened to. Tell them they have about 7 minutes to finish. Get different pairs together comparing the stories they had written. Take WC FB. Give each pair the original story. Give each pair the
