Subsidiary Aims

  • To review modal verbs of speculation. To give Ss practice in speaking for fluency.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • Discuss problems that doctors can have these days. To elicit the ideas that doctors may be sued for compensation.

I will do a role play scenario with a student of my choice. I will pick on the student or two students and do a Doctor patient role play scenario. Doctor does a simple eye surgery and makes a mistake and now the patient is blind. I will then ask the students what would you do now to the doctor. I will expect some jokes. Then I wil elicit the ideas of doctors being sued for compensation.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the recording the the text being given

I will pair the students and tell them to Match the words in the box to the definitions for 1-5. Once, completed after 5 minutes, I will ask a student from five of the groups to come up and write the answers on the board. After I will tell the students to have a seat.

Listening from recording 2.6 (8-12 minutes) • To make a connection with the words in the previous exercise as well as getting a gist of the recording .

I will play the recording. After the recording I will ask the students to engage with each other and talk about what the recording was about. After 3 minutes. I will play the recording again, letting them know they need to answer the questions before.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

I will tell the students that they will hear the recording one more time, then they will be asked to discuss and answer the questions with their partner. Once we have gone over and chosen the correct answers together. While they are discussing the questions I will pass out the Grammar Exercise #1, and tell them not to turn it over. Once the previous exercise is finished I will tell them to Look at the examples and answer the questions with their pairings/groupings. After we have chosen the correct answers, I will tell them to read silently to them selves the paragraph handed out. They will be given 20 seconds. I will ask them if the reading was a good or bad article. Then I will ask them to read again more closely and pick the best verb form to complete the sentences 1-8.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

I will ask what they have learned today. "What do we know we can do now if the Doctor makes a mistake?" Insurance costs for doctors could rise further. HE must be suffering from a migraine attack. The stroke might have been avoided. Doing an over-view of the grammar we learned today. A) The Future B) The present C) The past
