Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about Food around the world in the context of Food

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a Discussion in groups in the context of Food in your country

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will ask the sts which food and drink comes from their country and also which foreign food is popular in their country. T will show sts the pictures on the iTools and ask if they can identify the places and nationalities in the pictures. Use open-ended questions here.

Pre-Reading (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Sts will read the first line of each paragraph to write the correct heading to each paragraph. During this stage T will do CCQ's to elicit whether sts understand some of the new vocabulary words.

While-Reading #1 (10-11 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

T will divide sts into groups of A, B, C, D. The A group will read the first paragraph. B-group will read the second paragraph. C-group will read the third paragraph. D-group will read the last paragraph. They will discuss their specific reading in the group to understand. After this they will regroup so that each group will have at least 1 of A,B,C & D in the group to explain to the rest of the group their individual paragraph so that at the end the whole group will have full understanding of the whole reading piece.

While-Reading #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

Sts will now have to answer questions from no. 4 on p. 70. They can discuss this in their various groups. This is reading for detail. When they are done, T will provide answers with overhead projector.

Post-Reading/Speaking (5-6 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Sts will now have the opportunity to discuss in their groups what they have learned by asking a few questions to each other in no. 5, p. 70. T will monitor sts but not interrupt them while they are speaking.
