Description

In this lesson,Ss learn about present perfect simple and present perfect continuous in the context of Relationships. The lesson starts with controlled practice through completing statements with words in the context of relationships.

Main Aims

  • To highlight and practise the structure of the present perfect simple: subject+ have/has + past participle. And present perfect progressive: subject+have/has+been+infinitive+-ing.
  • Reading: to provide scan and detailed in the context of relationships

Subsidiary Aims

  • Listening to provide fluency speaking practice in a Discussion in the context of relationship
  • Provide practice of vocabulary through completing statements using words in the context of relationships

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in: Show the students 2 images and ask the CCQ: what keeps the family together? (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask student : How to describe a marriage between a man and a woman? What keeps the family together? Elicit the word : relationships

Pre-reading (2-2 minutes) • Prepare the Ss for reading task

Jigsaw reading: Split the students into 2 groups Give a clear instructions: Ss read the story of Ruth and Bill or Clare and Stan. I tell them to take notes from the stories because they are going to tell the story to a partner. Check if the Ss understand the instructions. Give Ss HOs Ss read the stories.

Post-Reading (5-5 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned and practise speaking skills

Pair work: after the Ss finish reading the stories. Students then pair up with someone from the other group and tell them about their story, and listen to their partners story. Ss then discuss their opinions about which relationship has the best chance of success and why. Give the Ss instructions to complete the sentences with Ruth and Bill or Clare and Stan. check the Ss understanding of the instructions. Give Ss HOs of the exe 2. in reading & Listening. Ss work on the exercise.

Feedback (2-3 minutes) • Check the students understanding of the texts. Checking for specific informations.

Check the answers of the exe 2: a-f with whole class.

Follow-up activity (5-7 minutes) • Provides a real opportunity to introduce speaking into a reading lesson and using the TL in real life topic.

Split the Ss into groups of 3. Ss do the exercise 4. Ask the Ss the question : what do you think are the secrets of a successful relationship? Ss discuss the topic. I monitor and stay close in case Ss need help.

Grammar: Ex 2 page 23: Group the students into pairs. Give instructions to Ss: complete the table with example sentences (a-c) from Ruth's story. check understanding: ask Ss : what are going to do now? Give the Ss HOs

Feedback (3-4 minutes) • Check the students answers , practice pronunciation.

Correct the answers of the EX 2. Practice pronunciation with the students. Drill chorally and individually. Use contracted fingers and highlight the contraction in : a) We've been together for a year now. b) We've been trying to live a normal life. c) We've decided to move away from our home town.

controlled practice (3-5 minutes) • Further practice of the TL

Give clear instructions to Ss: underline the correct verb form What does the verb describe in each case? Refer to the table in EX 1 and discuss your ideas with your partner. Give HOs.

Follow-up activity (5-6 minutes) • Use the TL in making questions.

Group Ss in pairs, change partner. Give clear instructions: Make questions using the present perfect simple or continuous, ask and answer the questions with partner. check Ss understanding: what are you going to do now? Give HOs Ss work on the Exe 2 page 23.

Feedback (2-3 minutes) • Check the students answers of Ex 3 page 23

Check Ss answers in Exe 3 page 23. Modeling the language and drilling.
