Description
Materials
Main Aims
-
To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about Painting in the context of Magic & Mystery
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide personalized speaking practice for Ss and focus on vocabulary in a student-centered way
Procedure (27-50 minutes)
Make copies of some photographs pf content-rich paintings, cut them into 5-10 pieces and put them inside an envelope. Ss must do this task as pairs and have to put the pieces together in a race. When finished ask them to put them back in the envelopes and ask them to recall 3 interesting things about each picture. Don't forget to set the time before they proceed.
Try to expand the Ss vocabulary using pictures, mimes or elicit some words by giving definitions. Remember to drill the most difficult ones chorally and individually in chunks or in the context. In the end you can label the words on the board for more details.
Ask students to look at their HOs individually and try to find out and list 3 interesting things on the picture. You may want to guide your Ss to pay attention to specific sorts of things.
Ss listen to an extract from an audio-guide in which the speaker discuss the meaning of painting. Ss listen to hear if any of the same details are mentioned. After they have listened to the recording, run a brief plenary feedback.
Attract Ss attention to exercise 3 at page 42 of their HO. Allocate up to a minute for Ss to read the notes as they need to know what sorts of information they need to answer from the listening. Monitor and make sure to play the recording for the 3rd time in case they need it. After finishing, ask them to compare their notes in pairs of course before giving feedback. Run a feed back and in order to make the feedback more student-centered, you can display the answers on the board.
Ask them to look at the exercise "Extend you vocab." at page 42 of the book/ HO. You may want to come up with some situational sentences and use the technique of guessing the meaning from the context. Run a feedback on the target language.
Ask Ss to do Ex. 4 at page 42/ HO. They work in pairs and ask and answer the questions. Encourage Ss to ask additional questions. As they finished, run a feedback. It is a very good idea to change the pairs to up the Ss interaction in the classroom.
