Description

To introduce and provide practice of speaking for fluency in the context of talking about when you were 13.

Main Aims

  • To help students talk about past experiences using was/were in simple past questions and answers.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice question formation with was/were. To build students’ confidence using simple responses in conversations.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-6 minutes) • Engage students, activate background knowledge, and introduce the topic.

T. shares a jamboard with sticky notes and the 1966 street scene image as a background Ss. add sticky notes with words or phrases describing what they see in the image. T. and Ss. discuss the ideas as a class: Which words are related to Birthday elements, people and celebration? T. asks: "Were birthdays different in 1966? How?" Possible Ss. answers: ✅ Short answers: Yes, they were different. No, they were similar. ✅ Simple sentences: Birthdays were small. There were no big parties. No video games, only board games. People had cake and balloons. Children played outside. No phones, no social media. They listened to music on the radio. Families ate together. °T. encourages peer interaction: Do you agree with Maria? °T. summarizes: In 1966, birthdays were smaller. There were no video games. People ate cake and played games.

Exposure (7-11 minutes) • Introduce past simple (was/were) and provide a listening model.

Productive Task(s) (7-15 minutes) • Encourage students to use past simple in real conversation.

Feedback and Error Correction (3-5 minutes) • Reinforce fluency and self-correction through class interaction.
