To provide reinforce and practice of the use of the Past Simple Tense
Procedure (28-45 minutes)
T will begin the lesson by showing some images of two friends meeting. T will ask Ss to describe what they see in the pictures and what is happening then, T will ask Ss to guess today's topic. T will write a couple of questions on the WB and ask Ss to share their personal experience briefly: What would you feel if you met your childhood best friend after a long time? What would be the first thing you ask about or talk about? Have you ever met an old friend after a long time and what was your feeling? Have you ever changed something about yourself?
T will processed by introducing the listening audio to Ss: The audio is talking about: Two friends meeting after not seeing each other for a long time. Now you will listen to a conversation between two old friends Peter and Anna who met after a couple of years. The two friends start to catch up by discussing and mentioning their personal life and how many changes occurred, they go through some old memories. T will play the audio once and then. ask Ss to listen carefully and take notes if they wish. After listening to the audio, T asks some general questions to ensure comprehension: What is the name of the two speakers? Where and when did they last meet? Who had a baby? Why did Anna move to a new apartment? What time will Anna be available for Peter to give her a call? What was different about Peter’s hairstyle? Does Peter mention any changes in his appearance? Describe Peter’s old look and new look. What job did Anna and Peter have before? What is their job now?
T will write on the WB some keywords related to the topic; reunions and past events to elicit and draw Ss's attention to the target vocab and grammar: get-together -used to -shaved -remembered -moved -hurry off -catch up Can you find any keywords that indicate the past? How do we talk about things that happened in the past regularly as a habit or a life style?
T will processed by recapping the past tense form: There are two forms of verbs: Regular verbs have -ed at the end (e.g. called, played, arrived). Irregular verbs have a different form, usually with a different vowel sound (e.g. wake → woke, break → broke, feel → felt). Then ask students to give some sentences using some regular and irregular verbs related to the topic. T will explain how to use Used to and give some examples: We can use it to talk about past habits (repeated past actions) that don't happen anymore. She used to smoke but she gave up a few years ago. We can use it to talk about past states that are not true anymore. We used to live in New York when I was a kid.
T will play the 2nd audio. Before playing it, T will explain to students that they should take notes on the key details, places, names, and events mentioned in the audio, as they will use them later to answer questions. After playing the audio, T will ask students if they need to listen to it one more time for better understanding. T will provide students with post-listening activities like true or false questions to check for understanding and questions for specific Information. How long was Richard in Thailand? Where is Sara from, and what is she doing now? What was Rob’s wife's name? Share some information about Carlos.
T will ask Ss to think about an old friend they are still in contact with or with whom they lost touch. Then, I will write a short story about this friend, how much they have changed over the years, and the highlights of their memories of their friendship. After each student has written their story, students will present it to the class.
