Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide Ss with clarification and practice of simple present wh-questions and short answers in the context of living at homes.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give practice in speaking for fluency

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-2 minutes) • To focus Ss on wh-questions

Picture of Andy. (tack on WB or use overhead) T-->Ss: Who is Andy? Where does he live? Who does he live with? How old is Andy?

Pre teach grammar (7-8 minutes) • To present wh-question form and answers

Tack on wh-words to left side of WB: Who, What, When, Where, Why, How. Make grid for right side on WB. Give each S an end of the sentence. Ss are to go up to WB and place their sentence next to correct wh-word. T demos. FB. Elicit errors from Ss. Change to correct wh-word row if necessary. Model and drill questions. Take down right side of board. Left side (wh-words) remaining. On WB write _________ words. T-->Ss. What kind of words are these? When do we use these words? Who, What, When, Where, Why, How = question words WB now says "question words".

Controlled Grammar Practice (15-16 minutes) • To provide controlled practice for making simple present wh-questions

"On this worksheet, we're going to practice." WB: _________ is he from? Brighton England. Elicit answer "Where" from Ss. Group Ss into pairs. Hand out worksheet. Instruct Ss to complete Exercise 1. FB: ask individual Ss to read 2-5 aloud. Additional FB: T writes on board "Are you from where?" Elicit correction from Ss --> "Where are you from?" "Wh-words. Do they come at the beginning? Or end?" Ss answer = beginning. INTRO to EX 3 On WB: "does live who he with?" S corrects and writes on WB correct answer, "Who does he live with?" Instruct Ss to complete exercise 2 with same partner. FB: give individual Ss a board marker and a sentence # to write on board. Elicit corrections from Ss if necessary.

Semi-Controlled Practice (4-6 minutes) • To give students practice of TL in semi controlled task

T create new pairs. Ss complete exercise 3, asking/interviewing partner questions from Exercise 2. T monitors and listens for errors in Ss answers. FB on WB if necessary. If time, complete same activity with new partner.

Free Practice (8-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

(Extra Task) in T book. Present table on overhead. Invite one S to be T's interviewee. Interview S with questions on overhead, encouraging S to respond quickly and naturally. T puts Ss in pairs to interview each other using prompts on the table. T monitors. FB if necessary. If time, switch pairs and complete with new partner

TL practice (5-6 minutes) • to give Ss practice of forming TL

Present pictures on overhead of different places/activities. Ss work in pairs. Office: Where do you work? Where does she work? Home: Where do you live? Where does he live? Who do you live with? Person: How old is he? What's his name?
